Emerging Australian/ South African/ Malaysian artist

beach view at Merewether, Newcastle, Australia, 550mm x 300mm, oil on canvas, june 2010.
Eddie is Landscape Architect and International emerging artist that loves portraying human behavious in contrast to technology, playing off nature and just entertaining with humoristic images.
Eddie Botha, now aged 36, was born 1975 in Kimberley, South Africa, and had his first drawing published in the school newspaper at the age of 6. He never stopped producing since, and had art-lessons through his schooling career. He grew up in Pretoria, and moved to Malaysia at the age of 25. Eddie and his Malaysian wife are permanently residing in Australia, Newcastle where he profusely produces art from his home-studio.
Eddie says; ‘I find it to be a wonderful emotional outlet where I can express my feelings, views and hopefully have a positive influence on society.’
His drawings are perhaps a bit obscure, certainly entertaining and always humorous. Placing objects out of context, they portray serious subjects in everyday life. There are always people in the artwork, as that is what life evolves around. The focus has moved to humanized buildings and machinery. The influence of technology and structures in our lives is just so profound. Building swallow people up in the morning, and spit them out in the evening. Technology is us and we are technology. Subjects such as religion, lust, love and greed is always part of the story. A story is what it should tell, and Eddie wants people to interpret the work and think about it.
Both God and people inspire Eddie. The influences of the world, cultures around the world, and the advancement of the human race, whilst holding onto religion and love remain the underlying storyline. Being an African at heart, nature is always important to him, but lately has taken a backseat compared to earlier works, after 6 months in London. Being a graduated Landscape Architect, his style has become more graphic and simplified, using mainly pen and pencil, but also oil and even watercolors. Specially prepared sheets with soya sauce, sugar, tea, coffee and even the occasional unfortunate insect are used to give character to the works. Recycled timber is used to frame the artworks professionally, making them fit the scenes and colors perfectly.
Eddie’s greatest achievement has been to have turned full time artist in January 2011, and is eager to change the world to be a better place for everyone. He has won the Maitland City council’s ‘waste as art’ competition in 2010, and had dozens of successful exhibitions through the Newcastle region and 2 in London in the past 18 months. An exhibition is planned for Singapore later in the year.
"I hope you feel touched by my works. They tell stories of life, joy, troubles, growth and sometimes pain."
Kind regards and thanks for looking. I upload my latest works at the end/beginning of each month, so don't forget to pop in regularly.
I also run a company called Rustic Frames, where I make frames from recycled timber and found objects. Do let me know if you are interested in seeing some of them.
